TOBIAS HARTMANN, PhD

based in Heidelberg, Germany

Dr. Hartmann has been working on the neurobiology of Alzheimer’s disease for more than a decade. His research focuses on the cellular mechanisms linking the activity of APP secretases with lipids and on the utilization of the therapeutic potential of lipids and lipid based pharmaceuticals in Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Hartmann works include i) identification of the role of intracellular cholesterol trafficking in amyloid beta production, and the effects of this trafficking on presenilin localization, ii) elucidation of the cellular organelles involved in amyloid beta production, and ii) discovery of the capacity of statins to reduce production of amyloid beta protein in vivo and in vitro, and to lower amyloid beta levels in human cerebrospinal fluid in mild Alzheimer's disease.
