MARK A. SMITH, PhD

based in Cleveland, Ohio

The focus of Dr. Smith’s research involves investigating the pathological mechanism(s) underlying selective neuronal death in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Smith’s research involves a variety of techniques ranging from histological to molecular biology and cellular models. The major hypothesis being pursued is that oxidative stress, and in particular lipid peroxidation, plays a pivotal role in disease pathogenesis. Therefore, current work is directed towards elucidating triggers of oxidative stress including i) fundamental metabolic alterations; ii) homeostatic dysregulation of transition metals; iii) signal transduction alterations; and iv) inappropriate re-entry into the cell cycle.

Dr. Smith also serves as Editor-in-Chief (together with George Perry) for the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease.

Key words: Alzheimer disease, oxidative stress, free radicals, signal transduction, phosphorylation, neurodegeneration, lipid peroxidation, hydroxynonenal, tau
